Best time to day trade futures: sessions, volume and cutoffs
- CME equity index, energy and metals futures trade nearly around the clock: Sunday 6:00 PM to Friday 5:00 PM Eastern, with a one-hour break each day from 5:00 to 6:00 PM ET.
- Volume is usually highest around the US stock market open (9:30 AM ET) and into the close (4:00 PM ET), and lighter overnight and around midday.
- Scheduled economic releases, many at 8:30 AM ET, can move prices sharply in seconds.
- Prop firms require you to be flat by a set time each day, often between 3:10 PM CT and 5:00 PM ET.
- There's no single best time. The right window is one where your setups appear, the market is liquid, and you can trade it consistently.
One of the appeals of futures is that the market barely closes. But being open doesn't mean every hour is equally tradable. Here's how a typical day works for the most popular day-trading contracts, and what prop firm rules add on top.
When futures are open
CME Globex runs equity index futures (ES, NQ, YM, RTY and their micros), crude oil and metals from Sunday 6:00 PM ET to Friday 5:00 PM ET, stopping for an hour each afternoon from 5:00 to 6:00 PM ET. Holiday schedules differ, so check the exchange calendar around holidays.
How a typical day unfolds (Eastern time)
| Time (ET) | What's usually happening |
|---|---|
| 6:00 PM – 3:00 AM | Asian session. Lighter volume in US index futures; moves can be slow or drift. |
| 3:00 AM – 8:00 AM | European session. Activity picks up; news from Europe can move prices. |
| 8:30 AM | Many major US economic releases (jobs, inflation, retail sales). Sharp moves are common. |
| 9:30 – 11:30 AM | US stock market open. Typically the busiest, most volatile stretch for index futures. |
| 11:30 AM – 2:00 PM | Midday. Often quieter, with thinner moves and more chop. |
| 2:00 PM | Fed rate decisions (FOMC days) are released at this time. |
| 3:00 – 4:00 PM | Into the stock market close. Volume often rises again. |
Crude oil has its own rhythm, including the weekly EIA inventory report on Wednesdays at 10:30 AM ET. Busier doesn't mean better. Volatility makes both wins and losses bigger, and fills around news can be worse than expected.
Prop firm cutoffs
Most prop firms don't allow positions overnight and require you to be flat by a set time. Published cutoffs at the firms we track:
| Firm | Be flat by |
|---|---|
| Topstep | 3:10 PM CT |
| Apex Trader Funding | 4:59 PM ET |
| Lucid Trading | 4:45 PM ET |
| Tradeify | 4:45 PM ET |
| Take Profit Trader | 4:55 PM ET |
| Alpha Futures | 4:20 PM ET |
| Bulenox | 3:59 PM CT |
| FundedNext Futures | 3:10 PM CT |
| Top One Futures | 4:00 PM ET |
| Earn2Trade | 3:50 PM CT |
| FTMO Futures | 4:10 PM ET |
Some plans also restrict trading around major news releases. Check each firm's rules page for the plan you're on. A position left open past the cutoff is typically closed by the firm or can breach the account.
Choosing your window
- Fit your life: a window you can trade every day beats a "perfect" one you can only make twice a week.
- Fit your setups: track which hours your setups work in. Your journal will show profit by hour of day after a few dozen trades.
- Keep it short: many day traders trade a focused one- or two-hour window, which also helps avoid overtrading.
- Know the calendar: check the economic calendar each morning, and decide in advance whether you trade through releases or step aside.
